Yep, spitting with passion although the latter has grown out of total chagrin than anything else… it’s not that I’ve been the band’s most ardent fan out there all these years, but I couldn't quite fathom their preposterous obstinacy in sticking with the beyond-obsolete post-thrashy numetallisms of the ill-faith… sorry, fated “Black Faith”… as a reunion stint, mind you. It’s unapologetic, to put it mildly… after a universally recognized flop comes another one, 20 years later. Yep, the dead have risen… only to fall back in their graves without opening their eyes even for a split second.
One more thing’s for certain: the sins of mankind won't be washed away with this; on the contrary, this effort here adds more to them, making the cross really hard to bear. And just to think that this parody starts so well with “Insides Out”, a short bursting thrash/deathster to the gory end. The noisy abrasive production and the groovy stomps towards the end early betray the guys’ intentions, though: this pure breed has been contaminated, folks; hold no illusions for a return to the roots. And none has been scheduled although “Mindless Reactions” does displays some old school vigour despite its modern thrashcore aspirations at some stage. And that’s pretty much it as right after the album sinks into numetal banality faster than a fishing boat after colliding with an iceberg, the title-track the ultimate hymn of the already retired 90’s generation, its boosted modern metal enthusiasm later used for the sculpting of two lengthy, excruciatingly boring cuts (“Hellhouse”, “Solar Prophesy”), sloppy combinations of groove, stoner, blues and what-not that would be really difficult to sit through.
But the thing is that the shorter material is equally as embarrassing, clinging from the friendly rock-ish veneer of “Fistula” to the clumsy cumbersome stoner/doomisms of “Seance”, the only redeeming sparkle being the weird spacey vibes of the otherwise lively near-thrasher “Ouija”, a diverse ride that nearly matches the legitimacy of the opener. Started with a half-bang, and finished with a half-bang, the actual content between those two sorely missing, the band turning their numetal propensity inside out, then grabbing an ouija board for help at the end in order to see who was to blame for this unpardonable fiasco. No one save for Mr. John Walker and Co., the truth is, the man’s corrosive hardcore-ish shouts spearheading this unimpressive parade, his noisy exploits behind the mike quite comparable to the ones from “Black Faith”.
Yes, time seemed to have stopped at the Cancer camp, stubbornly refusing to go beyond the 90’s gimmicks, keeping them in the groovy post-thrashy quagmire, not cutting them any slack whatsoever. Dissolution was the only logical conclusion from this unworthy comeback stint, followed by a one-demo spell under the name Hail of Fire; classic death metal this one, nearly reaching the heights from the guys’ first two full-lengths. Flames, fire… sounded like a rebellion name/title-wise… it only had to be matched on the music front… which happened two years back with the much much superior “Shadow Gripped”, a nostalgic look back at the band’s heydays, with the missing third ace, the bass player Ian Buchanan, from the original line-up finally added. Fires extinguished then, with the holy trinity back together? I’m not sure… who knows what faith colour the guys would choose to sell their souls to later?
